Quick answer: Select a PDF, type a password twice and download. The PDF is encrypted with AES-256 and asks for the password when opened.

How to use Protect PDF

  1. Select or drag your PDF.
  2. Type your password twice and choose optional restrictions.
  3. Download the protected PDF and share the password separately.

Strong encryption

Files are encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption, supported by Adobe Reader, browsers and phone PDF apps. Without the password, the content cannot be read.

Choosing a good password

Use at least 8–12 characters mixing words, numbers and symbols, and avoid birthdays or names. Send the password through a different channel than the file — for example, email the PDF and share the password by phone or message.

Printing and copying restrictions

You can also block printing and text copying. These restrictions are respected by most PDF apps but are not as strong as the open password itself, so rely on the password for real secrecy.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recover my password if I forget it?

No. The password is never sent to us, so nobody can recover it. Keep a copy of the original unprotected file somewhere safe.

Which apps can open the protected PDF?

Any modern PDF reader: Adobe Acrobat Reader, Chrome, Edge, Safari, and phone apps on Android and iPhone. They ask for the password first.

Can I change or remove the password later?

Yes. Use Unlock PDF with the current password, then protect the unlocked copy again with a new one.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything is processed directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device, so they stay completely private.
