Common limits

Meta description: about 155 characters. X (Twitter) post: 280 characters. Instagram caption: 2,200 characters. Average reading speed: about 200–250 words per minute.

Typical word counts

A tweet-length message is under 50 words, a cover letter 250–400, a standard school essay 500–1,000, a blog post 1,000–2,000, and a long-form guide 2,500 or more. One page of single-spaced text is roughly 500 words.

How words and sentences are counted

Words are counted as groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, so numbers and hyphenated words count as one word each. Sentences end at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are blocks separated by an empty line.

Changing text case

Use UPPERCASE for headings and labels, Title Case for article and email subject titles, and Sentence case to fix text that was typed with Caps Lock on. Copy the result with one click.
